Innovation and in-house manufacturing competence

Governor Thomas Stelzer visits Steyr Automotive

On 27 August, Governor Thomas Stelzer visited Steyr Automotive to see for himself the high level of vertical integration and technological expertise at the Steyr site. He also had the chance to meet with representatives of the German partner company BINZ Automotive, with whom emergency and rescue vehicles will be jointly developed and produced in future.

Insight into the entire value chain

During an intensive tour, the governor was given a comprehensive overview of Steyr Automotive's diverse business areas – from superstructures for street cleaning and waste collection to the painting of plastic, carbon and metal parts to bodywork and metal construction.

Thomas Stelzer was particularly impressed by the fact that over 90% of the value added for MUT superstructures is generated directly at the site – from raw sheet metal to the finished product. Since this year, this has also been the case for the MUT EcoLift, the first fully electric and fully automatic lifter for waste collection vehicles, which is already being used successfully in Austria and other European countries.

Partnership with BINZ: Combined expertise for special-purpose vehicles

Together with BINZ Automotive – like Steyr Automotive, a subsidiary of ASW Beteiligungsgesellschaft – the strengths of both companies will also be leveraged in the field of special-purpose vehicle construction in the future. BINZ is one of the leading providers of solutions for rescue, firefighting and police services and supplies the German Armed Forces, among others, with highly specialised vehicles.

The combination of BINZ's engineering expertise and Steyr Automotive's manufacturing expertise creates a powerful partnership that will supply vehicles to public authorities, rescue services and the defence sector in future – with a similarly high Austrian value added share as for MUT vehicles.
"Innovative strength paired with creativity and implementation power – that is the agenda in Upper Austria, as can be seen at Steyr Automotive. Sustainability and regional value creation are the focus here. Short delivery routes, high flexibility and excellent quality secure jobs and strengthen the location. I would like to express my gratitude for the commitment and clear dedication to Upper Austria as a location for work, business and innovation," said Governor Stelzer.

Safeguarding the future through vocational training

A key element for the future of Steyr Automotive is the training of young skilled workers. The company's own training centre is currently preparing around 130 apprentices for their careers in industry. The next cohort will be starting their working lives next week. At the end of the visit, the apprentices presented the governor with a gift they had designed and made themselves – impressive proof of the skills and creativity of the next generation.
